The open-type tunnel boring machine (TBM) is primarily employed in hard rock tunneling environments characterized by high geological stability and limited fracture zones.
⚙️ Description of Hard Rock Open-Type Gripper TBM
The open-type tunnel boring machine’s built with all the key parts—cutter head, drive gear, shield, the saddle, frame, spreader, and back support. It's been reliable on site.
What makes this one stand out is that NHI put together the core systems in-house. The main bearing is larger than usual, which helps keep it stable even when the load gets heavy. The arch assembly apparatus is designed for operational versatility across varying tunnel profiles. Propulsion is stabilized through a centering mechanism utilizing a spherical joint to mitigate misalignment risks. There's also a slurry sprayer tucked inside a chute, and the four-claw sealing helps with keeping pressure stable. The track holds up to 10 bar, which means muck removal goes pretty smooth.
This TBM variant is suited for formations with elevated uniaxial compressive strength and minimal stratigraphic discontinuity, offering a high-performance solution with favorable cost-efficiency in large-scale tunneling operations.
